Genre

GENRE FACTSHEET WORK

1) What example is provided of why visual iconographies are so important?
Star Wars

2) What examples are provided of the importance of narrative in identifying genre?
An example of this would be Indipendance day as it shows heros in a certain light and is intended to show them in this positive perspective.

3) What is the difference between character representation in action movies and disaster movies?
The factsheet indicates that in action movies there are often characters which tend to be viewed as sorts of "lone rangers" who will overcome the dilemma or situation of disequilibrium , where as in disaster movies there is usually a group of people who overcome an issue as in disaster movies the issue normally impacts a large group of people rather then an individual.
4) What are the different ways films can be categorised according to Bordwell?
Bordwell states that cinema itself is a sort of film genre, with its own conventions, and that a film can be made up of a number of genres.

5) List three ways genre is used by audiences.
Prior knowledge - The audience uses the genre to determine if they will enjoy the media text and should continue to read or watch the text.
The audience can also compare the media text to others , which are within the same or a similar genre.
Rejection - In a similar way to prior knowledge they can use the genre to decide that they do not enjoy the media text and should in fact stay away from it.

6) List three ways genre is used by institutions or producers.
Brining loyal audiences - people who are familiar with the genre ,which they enjoy most will be attracted to the genres which they enjoy most.
Marketing texts - trailers attract audiences also as they show some of they key or most attractive parts of a film for an audience to get excited about and potentially cause people to talk about it and for it to become trending.
It can set guidelines for what ideally should or should not happen in a film based on the genre and from what previous producers have used and from what has been successful in the past.

7) What film genre is used as an example of how genres evolve? What films and conventions are mentioned?
A genre which has evolved is the horror genre as people are now more then ever looking for the thrill and excitement which you receive from watching horror films, and because of this it is harder and harder to give people this sort of thrill from watching films which is why there is a lot of excitement and hype when there is a movie which can truly scare people and give them that thrill once again.
