Genre

GENRE FACTSHEET WORK 1) What example is provided of why visual iconographies are so important? Star Wars 2) What examples are provided of the importance of narrative in identifying genre? An example of this would be Indipendance day as it shows heros in a certain light and is intended to show them in this positive perspective. 3) What is the difference between character representation in action movies and disaster movies? The factsheet indicates that in action movies there are often characters which tend to be viewed as sorts of "lone rangers" who will overcome the dilemma or situation of disequilibrium , where as in disaster movies there is usually a group of people who overcome an issue as in disaster movies the issue  normally impacts a large group of people rather then an individual. 4) What are the different ways films can be categorised according to Bordwell?  Bordwell states that cinema itself is a sort of film  genre, with its own conventions,

Reception Theory

The dominant view of this advert is to show 50 Cent as a black man who had a hard lifestyle and was allegedly shot 8 times and still managed to be a successful music artist, director and actor. It is showing him as inspiration. Majority of their target audience is the younger generation who are around the age of 15/16 and 50 Cent is an iconic figure whose music most people between the age of 10-25 have heard of. It also allows people of a young age who are in a similar situation to him will look up to him and try to do the things which he did right in perhaps an even better way then he had done them himself. The opposing view of this advert is that they are exploiting his experiences and showing his community and the area, which he was raised to be a violent place. Some people call 50 Cent a sell out for doing things such as acting and adverts such as this one , as they believe that he is exploiting his experiences, although it is something that many people go through. Narrative

A movie which shows Todorovs theory ideally is Die Hard . 1. John is coming home to his family for Christmas and all is calm.  (This is the equilibrium, where everything is balanced in the world). 2. Hans and his team of terrorists take over the building which is hosting a Christmas part of which john(the hero)  was attending. 3. John isn't in the room when the terrorists arrive, so is able to move up the building when he hears screaming.  People outside of the building realise there's a disruption when a police man's car is shot at from the building. 4. The police try sending in a SWAT team in which fails. The situation is solved by John  throwing Hans out of a  window which kills him from impact. 5. The equilibrium is restored when the police got John, his wife and the other hostages out of the building, and the McClanes leave in a police car. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRsBREYFlIo This is the trailer for suits season 1. Advert Print

the image only uses black and white colours which may be to show that a serious message is being portayed by someone who a lot of people know and will proabably turn heads to see what they are talking about the image and text both take up half of the screen so we know that they are both equally important and can see thatsomething important is being told here even tho it is only by a sports company which normally people wouldnt think would give out important messages. there is a use of studio lighting to make 50 cent stand out so that people are attracted to the advert as they can see a familiar face. the largest text on the poster is the watermark of "i am what i am" which is a phrase people often use on a daily basis, which makes the advert much more relatable to an audience and could potetntially cause them to purchase a product. they have not specifies any product which they are selling by displaying it or shown somone who is associated with a sport such as cristiano r

Icons

Image
ICON: Index: Symbol: An index and an icon are so important in the world as they show directly what a brand or a company is promoting or trying to sell, which is extremely key for first impressions of a product. They can often give people something, which they can relate to and associate a product to. Companies may avoid using symbols in their brands as some people may not understand the purpose of these and may in fact have a negative perception to thee symbols, which is why it may be safer to avoid using these symbols entirely. The advert which we looked at in class at first seems like a supportive and positive advert which we tend to look at in a positive manor, however once we look beneath the surface of this advertisement we can see that the advertisement could be perceived in s very negative manor. When we look at the text it shows that the media text is telling women not to be themselves and that they should, "look like a lady" and "thin
