Introduction to feminism

1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?

Laura Bates started the everyday sexism project when she had previously been catcalled, which she didn't seem to acknowledge until it happened once again when she was on the bus the same day and noticed how many women experience this form of violation which is taken so lightly by society and is seen as a joke or even a ritual of some groups of men. She says that she accepts that pay has become more equal and women have been raising their voices for this but have never once began to talk about or face the issue, which is this behaviour of some men and how easily accepted it has become that it is seen as the norm now.

2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?

I think that there are two sides to this issue of whether or not we are in a post feminist state. One side being that for some people it has become a trend to say that they're a feminist, however I think people don't really understand what they mean by this and effectively don't really know what they are signing up to, however they believe that they will be called out about their opinion. On the other hand i think that there is still a lot of sexism, in the fact that in most relationships, it is hardly ever that the man out of a couple who will stay home to be be the home maker and to take care of children, and to this some may argue that their husbands are the ones who earn more money so it would make sense for them to stay home, however this is the issue that we face as most men are the earners in the relationship, equally the men may say that the women are better at cooking and taking care of the children, however i think these are both the wrong attitude and feminism is still required in western societies, but not as much as in third world countries as they still follow religion very strictly.3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project?

New technology was essential to the success of the Everyday sexism project as it allowed a number of women to explain their situation anonymously if they wished to and to do it easily. It is key that it allowed them to do this with such ease as one  of the issues was that people thought that it would be too much effort for them to tell anyone the truth and that no one would listen. New technology also allowed Laura Bates to look at the data which was given to her and easily show the statistics and stories of the victims.

4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is YOUR view on the future of feminism?

I think that there can never be an equilibrium and even if the everyday sexism project does what it achieves there will always be a minority or what people consider to be jokes will always be said as that is human nature.

Media Magazine: The fourth wave?

Read the article: The Fourth Wave? Feminism in the Digital Age in MM55 (p64). You'll find the article in our Media Magazine archive here.

1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?

The new fourth wave of feminism is also known as ‘networked feminism’. It aims to tackle social equality issues which are found on social media for example and are provided by new technology.Networked feminism is an issue as people are effected by it and are hurt by it as it allows people to be able to hide behind a screen and say something which the would never say in real life.It is a problem as women in some cases are still not treated equally even though they have been fighting for decades for equal rights, which is one of the largest anf longest standing petitions.

2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave ‘networked feminism’?

The first wave (1830's – early 1900's): Women's fight for equal contract and property rights.

Second-wave feminism is a period of feminist activity and thought that first began in the early 1960s in the United States, and eventually spread throughout the Western world and beyond. The third being the movement in which we are currently residing.

3) Focus on the examples in the article. Write a 100-word summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.

Everyday sexism was set up by Laura Bates when she noticed how ordinary it had become for people to make sexual comments and passes to women which are disrespectful and wanted people to come up and speak about their experiences.

HeForShe is a solidarity campaign for the advancement of women initiated by UN Women. Its goal is to achieve equality by encouraging men and boys as agents of change and take action against negative inequalities faced by women and girls which was founded by Emma Watson.

FCKH8 is a for-profit company that was founded in 2010, which sells t-shirts and accessories that features slogans with a social justice theme.

This girl can is Funded by The National Lottery and developed by Sport England  to help women overcome the fear of judgement that is stopping too many women and girls from joining i

4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?

I believe that this is the fourth wave of feminism as people are approaching this in a completely different way by using things such as modern technology. There is probably the largest number of people who would consider themselves to be a "feminist" then ever before.
