Introduction to Representation

1) List the different people/groups represented in the trailer.

Men
Women
Americans

2) For each group you identify, decide whether the representation is a dominant or alternative portrayal. Explain why you think this.

Men-Dominant
Men are seen to have a dominant portrayal, as they are seen to take advantage of the women in the film, fighting to save the woman and being aggressive. The main Character is seen to be strong, brave and seems to be better then all the other characters, effectively it shows that the main character is a man and has to save his daughter who is seen to be the "princess" who needs to be saved.

Women-Dominant
The stereotype for women is that they are vulnerable and require help to be saved. In the movie her father instructs her to do some things, which would help him to find her so that he is able to rescue her. The daughter is seen as weak and happened to find herself in exactly the situation which her father said she would be in and has put him into a position, where he has to rescue her.

Americans-Dominant
Americans are seen to be careless, especially in their youth, which is what occurs in the film. This is a common stereotype, which is why we see this in many films and we often see in films that typical American children from films don't listen to their parents and are often found wrong, however we are see this in a much more extreme scenario in this film.

3) What stereotypes can you identify in the trailer?

The main stereotype in this film is that Women are vulnerable and they often need help to be saved and often they need to be saved by a man. Another stereotype is that young people are very irresponsible and they often make mistakes in their youth, and do not listen to their parents. It also shows that European trafficking is a very big issue.

4) Why might the Taken trailer offend or alienate certain groups?

The taken trailer may offend women as they are shown to be weak and vulnerable and that they require saving and it may cause women to wonder why they are hardly ever the hero in the story and why they always have to be saved.

5) Why do mainstream film and television texts such as Taken so often use stereotypes?

I think that mainstream film and television texts such as taken often use stereotypes, as it means that texts are easy to understand for the audience as it may be what they would expect. It can often also be used to create humour in a text. It can also allow a plot to thicken quickly. They can be used to describe characters quickly, relying on existing audience recognition.
