1) Read the article and summarise it in one sentence.

The article talks about how even in the film the media is so important in controlling peoples perceptive of them and this is why it is so important how the all the candidates are presented and how snow is shown as the superior.

2) What view of capitalist ideology is presented in the Hunger Games films?

The capitalist ideology is presented in the Hunger game films as there is a clear show that there is many things wrong with capitalist ideology and may be hinting that there are elements of a capitalist society in the world right now. It shows the very large difference between the rich and the poor in the world and shows how some people struggle so much that they cannot afford food and general necessities and some people literally have money to throw away. I think that there is one iconic scene in the film where Katniss and Peeta are invited to a large party where all the capitalists are and this is where there is an enormous amount of food and once the people at the party are extremely full and can eat no longer they drink some sort of blue beverage which makes them throw up everything which they ate so that the can eat again and I think a really important quote from this scene when Katniss questions this action is the reply which she receives from the man who just did it, which was " Well how else are you supposed to eat everything", which shows the massive amount of excess food which they have as the people in the other districts suffer without resources.

3) What do the Hunger Games films suggest about the power of the media to shape and influence ideological beliefs?

The 'Hunger Games' films suggest that the media has an extremely large amount of power in the way they shape and influence the ideological beliefs of an audience as people believe what they hear often especially if they see it in the media as they believe that is a reliable source. In the film they have to behave in a very particular and some what fake way to put on a show to the world that everything is okay. Katniss has her family threatened if the do not behave in a proper manor when in front of the media. It also shows that the media is controlled by the rich and powerful and will almost always portray them in a positive light as they are the ones who control and decide what will be shown to the public.

1) Read the article and summarise it in one sentence.

The article talks about ideology and some of the ideologies which we see and deal wit, on a daily basis and states some of the key theorists who have theories on these topics. It speaks about how some forms of ideology are used to control us and potentially keep those in power to retain their position of power.

2) What are the four accepted ideological beliefs in western societies highlighted by the article?

  • Money - Happiness
  • Consumer goods - Fulfillment
  • Marriage/Family/Children - Happiness
  • Obedience - Fulfillment
3) What does Gramsci's theory of hegemony suggest about power and ideology in society?

Italian Marxist philosopher Antonio Gramsci introduced the concept of hegemony, and its role in social control. Gransci defined hegemony as an important way in which
those in power maintain their control through consent,
rather than the use of force.

4) What does French theorist Louis Althusser suggest about ideology and consumerism?

The French Marxist theorist Louis Althusser offers a way of understanding how we are controlled through ideology. His view was that ideology is the greatest material power and dominates our day to day lives through two key forms of control:

1. Repressive State Control, which is the major institutions in countries such as the government, army, police, courts of law etc. These main groups control people by creating laws and having people such as the police or army enforcing these laws and the people don't really have a choice in what laws there are or the repercussions of the breaking of these laws.

2. The other being ‘Ideological State Apparatuses’ such as the Church, the media, educational institutions, the family unit etc. These institutions also control people by creating what people consider to be social norms so that people would think that these things are just a way of life and they will just follow it.

5) Do YOU agree with the idea behind They Live - that we are unthinkingly controlled by the media which is run in the interests of the economic elite? These are the big questions of A Level Media!

I think that it is very possible for us to be controlled by the media and and from repressive state control as we simply follow the rules which are provided to us and also follow the media as we believe it to be a reputable source and often believe in "everyone's doing it.", therefore we should be doing it to, which may have made some things which we would normally consider to be abnormal to become part of the norm.
