Representation & David Gauntlett

1) What is collective identity? Write your own definition in as close to 50 words as possible.

Collective identity refers to the shared definition of a group that derives from its members' common interests, experiences, and solidarities.

2) Complete the task on the factsheet (page 1) - write a list of as many things as you can that represent Britain. What do they have in common? Have you represented the whole of Britain or just one aspect/viewpoint?

James  Bond, Tea, London bridge, Buckingham palace, Fish and chips, Diversity, Rugby, Sherlock Holmes, The queen, Black cabs, Red post boxes, Churchill.

I think that I am representing only one aspect of Britain which is the stereotypical viewpoint which some other people from other countries may think about Britain.

3) How does James May's Top Toys offer a nostalgic representation of Britain?

James May's Top Toys is a BBC documentary in which James May explored and celebrated his favourite toys. The show included May dropping a parachuted Action Man from a helicopter after an actor named George Huxley dropped it from a window, proving the parachute did not work. The toys which he remembers as he played with them when he was younger would not be relevant to the youth of today and the style of the show wouldn't appeal to them also which means that it is designed to be interesting and appeal to an audience of his age. It offers nostalgia as it allows parents perhaps to see how the toys of their age differ from the toys of the current generation.

4) How has new technology changed collective identity?

New technology has changed collective identity as it allows people who are part of a group to become closer to each other and communicate what they like and dislike, which is why it has become so much easier for fan culture to become so popular over the years and allow the most popular things to bring so much more attention to them and for the smaller productions to also receive attention as they are distributed to a much wider audience and receive much more exposure.

5) What phrase does David Gauntlett (2008) use to describe this new focus on identity?

'Make and Connect Agenda'

6) What does Gauntlett suggest about creativity and identity?

There has been a shift with the 'sit-back-and-be-told-culture' to a 'making-and-doing culture'.
Meaning that people of today are moving away from becoming "sheep" and simply following the conventions and rules of society to allow their imagination to be set free and for them to do as they please.

7) How does the Shaun of the Dead Facebook group provide an example of Henry Jenkins' theory of interpretive communities online?

It provides an example of Henry Jenkins theory of interpretive communities online as it shows how they communicate with one another by using a host website, Facebook.
