Essay Question (25 marks)

Judith Butler argues that gender is a performance and that gendered behaviour is socially constructed.
To what extent do your magazine close study products support the idea that gender is a performance.[25 Marks]

Judith butler argues that gender is a performance and gendered behaviour is socially constructed, she suggests that gender is a performance and the way we behave and that gender is not natural and that we have learned to become the way which we are and that our views on traditional masculinity and femininity have been constructed. I think that our close study product, being Men's Health does not supports the idea that gender is a performance as the magazine is supposed to reach as wide of an audience as possible to increase the sales of its products, however in this case chooses not to and instead chooses to appeal to a very niche audience. Already by having a name such as Men's Health, this suggests that half the population have already been cut out of the potential consumers by the masthead, now you may think that there are still a very large number of potential buyers, however they continue to narrow this down by enforcing the views of very traditional men. I think that the magazine acknowledges that there is a wide variety of different behaviours and values for men, however suggest that their way, the traditional view is the correct way. It also applies a direct mode of address within the centre imagine to distribute a attributes associated with men to reinforce and survive fact that it promotes the dominant social position of position which conforms to the typical stereotype. This would then result in creating a great impact on the demographic.
On the other hand we could argue that Men's Health exploit this and use the the fact that they know how men behave due to their biological differences to women and use this to tell them that although they may not be the breadwinner any longer they can find comfort in taking control of the one thing which they do have control over and this is their bodies and their fitness, they use this information to get them to purchase their magazine as they claim this is what they need to do. They are trying to promote an exclusive experience and attempt to make the audience feel as if they are missing out on something premium which everyone else should have.
