1) Come up with a news story from the last 12 months for each of the categories suggested by Harriss, Leiter and Johnson:
  • Conflict - Tension or surprise - "Brazilians began voting on Sunday in a polarised presidential race that could result in the election of a far-right former army captain."
  • Progress - Triumph or achievement - "Theresa May says important progress made at EU summit"
  • Disaster - Defeat or destruction - "Devastating Monsoon Floods in Kerala, India."
  • Consequence - Effects on an individual - "Why does 'Stoptober' make it easier to quit smoking?"
  • Prominence - The well-known -
  • Novelty - The unusual or emotional -
2) What example news story does the Factsheet use to illustrate Galtung and Ruge's News Values? Why is it an appropriate example of a news story likely to gain prominent coverage?

The example given by Gultang and Ruge is 'British servicewomen dies after Afgan bomb blast'. This is mostly to be covered in mainstream media and new because it is it is unexpected event it happen ed by surprise. Furthermore, it quite negative because the news is bad and gives the view that Afghans are out to get European and other people. This is also likely to gain prominent coverage because this story is also unpredictable and the audience are more likely to view it since happens rarely.
3) What is gate keeping?

Gate keeping is the process of filtering information prior to dissemination. This process is usually done via the editor but the gate keeping process could be seen to be more than a simply an editor choosing one story over another, it could also refer to how journalist select certain lines of questioning, or use some words over other to describe people and events.

Bias through placement
Bias by headline
Bias by photos, captions, and camera angles
Bias through use of names and titles

5) How have online sources such as Twitter, bloggers or Wikileaks changed the way news is selected and published?
Online sources have changes the way news is selected and published because it is more regulated. This means that news stories and journalist have no freedom to publish what they believe or what they think. This allows ordinary citizens to gate keep what other people have written and published and can openly ask for apologises if anything is done wrong.

6) Complete the task on the last page of the Fact sheet regarding Sky News and Twitter:

This reveals that twitter is very fast at updating and provides with

What does it say about how news is being produced?

The audience is made to read this and take in the information and actually get back at this news story and tweet about it. This will spread it and actually cause people to read it more.

What role does the audience have in this process?

This is because the news not have enough evidence or actual substance for it to be backed up which makes it a problem as journalists will just be posting to look for attention.

Why might this be a problem for journalistic standards?

The audience is made to read this and take in the information and actually get back at this news story and tweet about it. This will spread it and actually cause people to read it more.

    7) In your opinion, how has the digital age changed Galtung and Ruge’s news values?

In my opinion digital age changed Gultang and Ruge's news values because everything is evolving so it is hard for them to keep up with modern society. Nowadays everyone is being told to watch the news and there always has to be a reason behind it for the younger generation to actually watch it.
